Talon’s Point of the Day – Dec. 7th, 2016 Residue Of Grace

This morning  after I had finished a cup of coffee I was heading to the kitchen when a song welled up in my spirit. It was the classic old hymn “Grace Greater Than All Our Sin.”  As I sat my cup down I caught a glimpse of the partially dried residue that remained in the bottom. A heart had formed in my cup, something that had never happed before, and certainly not with that cup. It was in that moment the though occurred to me that we often slide into rebellion against our loving Father, yet if we are wise we quickly run back to the grace we know is calling us, but if we linger it can almost appear that His grace becomes only a residue of what we have previously experienced in abundance.

This is of course a foolish perception. for God’s grace, whether we feel it or not is never just a residue. It never dries up. It is a river, waiting for us to dive in and be cleansed anew.

While this post certainly applies to me, and more often than my shameful heart is willing to admit, I cannot help but believe this all occurred so that I would share it here for someone who, by God’s grace, will come across this post and turn their heart back to the Father who loves them completely.

Here is that old hymn that God one day laid on the heart of Julie Harriette Johnston back in the early 1900, so that I would come across it and be moved to turn my own heart back to our loving Father who loves us so completely. May it stir your heart as well.

Talon’s Point of the Day -Aug 28th, 2016 Scorched Earth

Just a reminder to all that think Jesus was all just about making sure you can have the warm fuzzies in life; the very Christ Jesus who willfully gave all of himself to set us free from sin and it’s eternal hellish consequence is the same Jesus who has a scorched earth policy.

The first angel sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.

Don’t get caught in the firestorm.

Talon’s Point of the Day – Easter Sunday, 2016

May I crucify my flesh, though not to be risen the third day.

Talon’s Point of the Day – Feb13th, 2016 Endure The Flames

Heart of Fire

Just as with gold and silver, the heart is only purified by fire. If you find yourself standing in the middle of the flames, with everything around you that you hold dear burning away fear not. God has not left you. He did not let you fall into the furnace while he was looking away. As unpleasant as it is to be told this, God not only placed you in the furnace, he is stoking the flames. As little as it may comfort you I compel you with everything within me to stand and trust him. Just as he did with the three Hebrew children, just as he has done with me repeatedly, he’ll be faithful to you. He is not about to let the flames destroy you. Let him burn away the dross in your life, for what will remain is what he designed you to be. Do not seek an exit. Do not run. For in due season you will behold the beauty of what he desires to create within you.

Talon’s Point of the Day – Jan 14th, 2016 Too Proud To See Beauty

If we refuse in pride to see the beauty of God’s Law, the beauty of his Grace will be veiled to us. In the very act of pride we blind ourselves to the greatest beauty in history, and prevent it from being given to us freely.

“But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble” – James 4:6

Let us lay aside our pride and truly see for the first time.

Talon’s Point of the Day – Jan 9th, 2016, “In Christ Alone Is Your Debt Paid For You”

To paraphrase Ravi Zacharias:

In Buddhism there is no grace. You pay
In Hinduism there is no grace. You pay
In Islam there is no grace. You pay

Only in Christ has perfection in human form paid for you, and poured grace out for you in abundance beyond your need. It’s up to you to receive.

My Train Wreck Conversion

As a leftist lesbian professor, I despised Christians. Then I somehow became one.

My Train Wreck Conversion

The word Jesus stuck in my throat like an elephant tusk; no matter how hard I choked, I couldn’t hack it out. Those who professed the name commanded my pity and wrath. As a university professor, I tired of students who seemed to believe that “knowing Jesus” meant knowing little else. Christians in particular were bad readers, always seizing opportunities to insert a Bible verse into a conversation with the same point as a punctuation mark: to end it rather than deepen it.

Stupid. Pointless. Menacing. That’s what I thought of Christians and their god Jesus, who in paintings looked as powerful as a Breck Shampoo commercial model.

As a professor of English and women’s studies, on the track to becoming a tenured radical, I cared about morality, justice, and compassion. Fervent for the worldviews of Freud, Hegel, Marx, and Darwin, I strove to stand with the disempowered. I valued morality. And I probably could have stomached Jesus and his band of warriors if it weren’t for how other cultural forces buttressed the Christian Right. Pat Robertson’s quip from the 1992 Republican National Convention pushed me over the edge: “Feminism,” he sneered, “encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism, and become lesbians.” Indeed. The surround sound of Christian dogma comingling with Republican politics demanded my attention.

Talon’s Point of the Day – Nov 7th, 2015 Be a proper tool

Just as God’s perfect love cannot be disassociated from his just wrath, our love for the lost must include the sharp edge of truth, cutting through the very decay that blinds the sinner to their disease of sin.

God truly is the surgeon of the heart, but unless we are willing to be the unpleasant sharp blade the patient will die. Transversely, no one ever engaged in precision surgery using a baseball bat. The same God who is the master surgeon is also the artisan who perfectly hones the blades he can use in his miracle surgeries, and he is the very autoclave necessary to make sure pathogens are not introduced. Unless we submit to the grinding of our dullness, and the heat of routine purification, we cannot be useful, and our purpose for being created is wasted.

Talon’s Point of the Day – Oct.18th, 2015 Bury your gods

In January of 2014 I posted the following:

“That which you lust for you worship.  That which you worship is your god.” – Talon “You shall have no other gods before you.” – God, Exodus 20:3

Dear Christian, let us break out our metaphorical hammers and shovels, crush our gods, and bury them once and for all, for its a dangerous thing to wait until God himself does it for us.

Do you lust for material things? Perhaps a sports team or music figure has your passion? Or another person who isn’t your God given spouse? Dig deep in your heart, for God sees all.
